An Amalfi Coast luxury trip is once-in-a-lifetime: pastel villages stacked on cliffs, lemon groves, and some of Italy’s most beautiful hotels. Done well, it is pure luxury. Done badly, it means hours in traffic and crowded ferries. This guide shows you how to plan it the smooth way.
Quick facts
- Best time to visit: May, June and September offer warm weather with fewer crowds than July and August. Many hotels and restaurants close from roughly November to March.
- Getting there: Fly into Naples. From there, a private transfer is the easiest way to reach the coast, especially with luggage. In season, ferries also link Naples, Salerno and the coastal towns.
- Driving: The coastal road is narrow and congested, and in busy periods authorities have restricted visitor cars by license plate number on alternating days. Most visitors are better off with transfers, ferries and private drivers. Check the current rules before you plan to drive.
Where to stay
Positano

The postcard village, with dramatic views and many of the coast’s top luxury hotels. Expect lots of steps, beach clubs and the most glamorous atmosphere. Best for couples and honeymooners.
Ravello
Perched high above the sea, quieter and more refined, with famous gardens and summer concerts. Ideal if you want calm evenings and sweeping views, and don’t mind being away from the beach.

Amalfi town
The most central base, with the main ferry hub and easy connections to other villages. More practical than glamorous, which makes it great for day trips.
Sorrento (nearby)
Not technically on the Amalfi Coast, but a convenient base with grand hotels, good transport, and easy trips to Capri, Pompeii and the coast.
Amalfi Coast luxury experiences worth booking
- A private boat day: The best way to see the coast is from the water, with swim stops in quiet coves and lunch at a seaside restaurant.
- A day on Capri: Go early, or book a boat tour that circles the island, to avoid the worst of the crowds.
- A cooking class or lemon grove visit: Learn to make local dishes and see how limoncello is made.
- A private driver for a day: Lets you see several villages without fighting for bus seats or parking.

A 4-day luxury itinerary
- Day 1: Private transfer from Naples to Positano. Aperitivo with a view and dinner on a terrace.
- Day 2: Private boat day along the coast, with swimming and a long seaside lunch.
- Day 3: Capri by boat, then a relaxed evening back on the coast.
- Day 4: Ravello’s gardens in the morning and a lunch in Amalfi town before departure.

Planning tips
- Book top hotels and summer boat tours months ahead; the best ones sell out.
- Pack light. Many hotels are reached by steps, and porters may be needed.
- Reserve dinner tables for sunset in peak season.
- Confirm ferry schedules close to your dates, since sea conditions can cancel sailings.
